Filming in the Cockpit

Okay, so with Can't Stop the Serenity upon us, we decided to buckle down, and get the cockpit finished so that we could film a short piece for the local CSTS screening.

Last Saturday (June 19th) we all gathered together and made it happen.

So here's some pictures - all but one of which were taken by Miranda. (remember to click Read More at the bottom)

Miranda and I shortly after I arrived at the set

***Progress Update - April 4, 2010 - Including cockpit pictures!***

All righty, well I was able to get out to the cockpit today, and take a look. I gotta say, it looks awesome! When the lights got turned on, well...I felt like I was finally back on Samsara. The old excitement for ItB has crept back in. Thought I'd share some pictures with all of you. (Remember to click "read more" to see them all)

The exterior:

Looking down from where the bunks will be towards the cockpit:
***Progress Update - March 21, 2010***

So first off, I want to apologize to the handful of you who have stuck around, about our lack of communication and progress. Truth be known, things just kept happening to cause delay after delay. All of the spaces where we had our sets built, or were building them got sold, and we had to scramble to dismantle the sets and find a place to either rebuild or store them, until such time as we could find a place to rebuild.

But the good news is, our cockpit set, which was what we most needed to have in order to finish filming, has found a new home, and is being rebuilt. It's been reassembled, tomorrow our electronics guys are going in to do all the wiring for the lights, and monitors and blinky things, because as we all know, blinking lights means technology.

Moving day

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were forced to move our cockpit set today. So, Aaron and I dismantled everything, loaded it all up in a cube van, and drove it out to his boss' FX shop in Langley.

Laura met us there, and the 3 of us offloaded it. If Aaron has some time off this week (he's been doing a lot of work on a super top secret movie that's filming here), then he's going to get to putting it back together, and along with his co-workers, get it all rigged up, and looking super awesome - very exciting stuff.

We were also able to see some of the cut together footage last weekend - and everyone's excited to get it all done and out there for everyone to see. Seems y'all have been waitin' a spell for it ;)

Cockpit build update!

All right, so this past week, Aaron, Sean and I have been working our butts off, trying to finally get the cockpit set finished, so we can get in there and film the remaining scenes.

We're not finished, but we're starting to get really close - and it's pretty exciting!

Here's a few teaser photos - now keep in mind that these pieces are just roughed in, and EVERYTHING is going to end up getting painted and there will be lights, so pay no attention the colour anything is at the moment :)

Pics:

The Captain on Battlestar Galactica

Well, it was suggested to me that you all might be interested in this.

I worked regularly on Battlestar Galactica all throughout season 4 playing an officer. I can usually be seen in the CIC, but I show up at numerous places around the ship. I never did get an actual speaking role on the show, but the week before last, in the episode titled The Oath, I had a nice little scene.

As Lee and Kara are going through the corridors, Lee turns a corner, and there I am, with a pistol in my hand. I signal I'm on their side, and I head on down the opposite direction.

It was quick, it was cool, and I got some nice coverage. Check out the pictures below :)

Cool new stuff

A locally produced TV show is in the process of getting rid of all of their stuff now that the show has ended, so Aaron and I went down there today, and acquired a whole bunch of great stuff.

This is all going to be used in the completion of our cockpit. Things are really shaping up nicely!

Anyone know where we could get a couple of airplane yokes? :)

Cameras rolling again

Yes it's true, the cameras were once again rolling this weekend.

Earlier in the week, Damien surprised me with a call telling me that he had set up a shoot for the weekend, in order to complete some of our remaining (non cockpit related) scenes.

So after a few days of furious planning and phone calls, we got the people arranged, and figured out the elements we needed. A quick plundering of a popular TV show's wardrobe lock-up provided the requisite costumes for our cast, as well as a little advice from the prop's department regarding an important element, and we were good to go.

A small group of us (Me, Miranda, Damien, Dennis and his son Jake) gathered at Damien's house Saturday morning, where we had the actors try on their costumes (yay, they fit perfectly!), and Miranda did their make-up. We then loaded up our people and stuff, and off to Aaron's!

Cockpit build

Yes, it is actually happening. Last week, we spent a couple of days in Aaron's garage with power tools and bits of wood and stuff. We managed to use the power tools to fashion the bits of wood and stuff into a cockpit shaped thingy.

We got all of the walls framed and put up, we skinned them, and started attaching the vacuform panels to them. The drive controls are roughed in, but we still have to wire in the electronics. We also have to form and install the window panels, and paint everything. But some of the hardest stuff is behind us. It's great to see it finally coming together.

Forward progress you say?

Seems like we actually have some of that happening.

It appears as though there was a lot of miscommunication between our construction coordinator, and everyone else involved with the project. Poorly chosen words led us to believe something that apparently wasn't true.

So, that being said, the materials needed to start building our cockpit were purchased last week. Construction on said cockpit is slated to begin this week. We're also on the hunt for various bits and bobs to make blank walls and consoles look like they make things go whoosh. I have some leads, so hopefully they pan out.

What's happening over at ITB?

As many of you have noticed, there's not a lot of activity on the site lately. You're all probably wondering what the heck's going on with ITB - the summer release date came and went without so much as a "by your leave". Nobody connected with the show has had much to say as to what's going on. Are they still filming? Do they have a planned release date? Were they all wiped out during a weapons malfunction?

Well the answer to all 3, currently is no.

Here's what's happening with the project. The last time we filmed anything, was about a year ago. Why so long you ask? Well, we had pretty much shot everything we were able to up to that point. The bulk of what's left to shoot takes place in the ship's cockpit. That cockpit isn't built yet. Why isn't it buit? Well, that's what we'd all like to know. Our construction coordinator has had a number of personal and professional obligations that have kept him away from the build...plus, I'm fairly certain he's easily distracted by shiny things. Unfortunatenly for us, we don't have any other recourse with regards to the build at present. So we're stuck waiting on it to be started, let alone finished.
