I expect you know to turn off/down the area/ambient lighting..? Even if you're in atmo. it's too gray and not black and it would probably be bluer in atmo. Nice job. Keep it up!
yeah, there's no ambient light active in this scene. (C4D turns off the ambient by default, thank god) The greyness is because the entire scene is overexposed due to the camera being pointed straight into a star without the usual intervening atmosphere. It's a post effect. I guess I should turn it down a tad...

Thank you, Skunk, for putting your finger (and the appropriate term) on the thing that always bothers me about *most* digital art: the darks are never dark enough, or the light shining on one element of the composition is the wrong color vis a vis all the others.
Ambient light.
