Sera, the Aristocrat

Miranda Coombe as Seraphina York

Seraphina York was born into a life of crime, rich and privileged. All her life she was surrounded by luxury, a kind of criminal noblewoman: Sera York is the only daughter of Elisabeth York, the matriarch of the White Roses crime syndicate.

However, she wasn’t Lady Elisabeth's only child; Sera also had an older brother, Ciaran. Since Elisabeth had chosen to pass the leadership of the White Roses from mother to daughter, Ciaran could never lead while he had a female sibling. He was always jealous of Sera for this, but he always did his duty like a good older brother. He watched out for her, protected her, and taught her.

Not everything was content in the York family. Although she was taught to one day head the White Roses, Sera never wanted it. She was sick of her posh and spoiled lifestyle, sick of Elisabeth's iron-fisted rule, but above all sick of her mother's attempts to turn her into a younger version of herself in the name of the succession.

Eventually, Sera ran away from the White Roses with her guardian, Hank. Originally planning only to spend some time on her own tasting real freedom, things went horribly wrong for her when Cieran followed her to bring her back on their mother's orders. There was a struggle, and Cieran was fatally shot.

Unable to face her mother and thinking she might even be executed for this, Sera ran for real. Almost caught over and over, when her resources ran out she finally sought refuge on Samsara, a ship that between its captain and engineer is incredibly hard to find when Jon doesn't want it to be. She is being helped in part by the Jade Heron Tong, a bitter rival of the White Roses and one which would very much like to see them one day run by someone who owes them a blood debt.

Sera isn’t just another rich and pretty face, she is potentially a very capable criminal and lawyer. She was taught how to defeat most kinds of security, has always been good at handling firearms, and a deep understanding of Alliance criminal law has always been important to the Roses. But that’s the extent of her experience: training.

Although she is free-spirited and rebellious, she was raised in a very wealthy and aristocratic lifestyle. She is used to having the best of everything – and to having things go her way. She sometimes has a hard time thinking of her shipmates as equals, and the idea of having a Captain to give her orders is almost completely alien.
