Samson West. A fine hero’s name. It’s just a shame he ain’t the hero type. Sammy is Samsara’s genius mechanic. A mad scientist in the making, Sammy loves to tinker. He’s always making little inventions (chemical or otherwise) and is rarely not smudged with parts of the engine or his latest project. He even built Samsara’s pulse drive! In fact, ever since he set foot onto Samsara he’s been making the odd modification here and there. At this point, Samsara only superficially resembles the Skyhook class ship it's supposed to be...

Sammy is also the ship's cook, and he is a pretty good one at that (when he isn’t dripping interesting mechanical fluids into the protein packs).

Sammy was born into a middle class family. His parents were both engineers and although he always had a natural gift for engineering he always wanted to be a chef... and chemist, and inventor, and a dozen other things. He aspired to attend the culinary schools on Bernadette, and half of the most prestigious colleges in the 'Verse.

Then the Unification War broke out... and for Sammy, nothing changed. Granted, he was just a child at the time; somehow he was unscathed by the fact that his parents both went to war - on opposite sides!

After much argument and sabotaging, Solomon West declared for the Alliance, while his wife, Rachel, left to fight and fix for the Independents. Sammy went to stay with relatives and tinkered and cooked... and several years later, after the Battle of Serenity Valley, his parents both returned, settled their differences, and life in the West household resumed as before. This experience left Sammy with the perception that the War wasn’t as bad as everyone made it out to be, which puts him at odds with Dr. Call every so often.
