Dr. Marion Call is the ship’s medic, second in command and Jon’s closest friend - which isn't really saying much. He is the only member of the crew who actually fought in the Unification War - which side he was on has been debated amongst the crew. The fact that he never specifically wears Alliance or Independent colours doesn’t help either.

Other than the doctor himself, only Jon knows any details about Call’s military past. The doctor is usually a quiet, brooding sort, which on Samsara sometimes causes him to fade into the background - sometimes literally, if he passes out somewhere other than his bed, again. The exception is if the topic is politics or especially the War - Call has very strong feelings about these, even though much of the time he keeps quiet about exactly what those feelings actually are. Whatever happened to him then must have been terrible; Call is an incredibly heavy drinker, rarely seen without a bottle of whiskey and a haunted expression.

Like some of the other crew, Call has a lot of secrets. One of those is how he and Jon met, which is a fine topic of discussion amongst the crew. The doctor simply doesn't say, and the captain is inclined to make up absurd stories when asked.
